April - May 2009

During the month of April and May 2009, ABRO Gallery by Ada Balcácer is presenting a group show which includes ten Caribbean artists.

Of note in the exhibition is the work of Aurelio Grisanty. In his oeuvre, he constructs various landscapes of the same view using different techniques and compositions. For his part, Freddy Rodríguez incorporates the spirit of baseball practice, typical of his Dominican Republic homeland, into his art. Photographer Domingo Batista captures with mastery the natural beauty of the Caribbean landscape. Domingo Liz represents in his drawings, “The writings of the Ozama River,” a place located near Santo Domingo, DR, where Liz has lived and worked his whole life.

The pictures of Marian Balcácer appear to be pencilled drawings in color, and black and white compositions in the tradition of the classic Italian chiaroscuro. For his part, Paul Gerben’s photographs capture urban life in a distinctive and individual manner.

Ezequiel Taveras’ works in ceramic, printmaking and painting evidence the artist’s flirtation with the past. In the same way, Miami-based Máximo Caminero is inspired by pre-Columbian expressions. He constructs his own interpretation of the historical with a new conceptual vision.

Ada Balcácer, who heads ABRO gallery is one of the most important names in the Caribbean art scene. She outstands for her personal style and infinite creativity. In her work, she captures the ritual dimension of the human being and the world in which we live. Through ABRO Gallery, Balcácer promotes the development of Dominican, Caribbean, and Latin American art in the United States and abroad.

ABRO gallery is introducing in this show a collection of photographs by guest artist, Roger B. Stillz, titled Faces of Change. This is a collection of the new faces of the United States in the Obama era - faces of joy and hope in a bright future. Stillz states: “On January 20th, I saw a nation unite like never before. I was amazed by the numbers who came to support President Barack Obama at his inauguration. Through my photography I wanted to share my journey.”

The gallery will be participating in FIART, in Santo Domingo, DR from May 20 to May 24.
