Sergio A. Fernández – Global

FIFI projects, Wynwood Art District, Miami

October 11 - November 20, 2008

Global is the result of the photographic recording of different institutional edifices in various parts of the world. The project, which the Peruvian, Sergio A. Fernández began in 1998, continues to this day. The artist has assembled interior and exterior images of these administrative buildings, which are strangely similar to each other irrespective of the city or precisely when they were built. They are photographs of offices, desks, computers, filing cabinets, electrical installations, desolate spaces lit with fluorescent bulbs, environments of disquieting beauty in which human presence is barely suggested by the forgotten objects they still contain.

With Global, Sergio A. Fernández immortalizes the precise moment in which he shoots these images, producing a temporality for these spaces and converting time into a protagonist and constant referent throughout the series.

The works, which were exhibited at FIFI projects last autumn, challenge the observer to imagine the scenes that could have occurred in these stereotypical places, where architectural design appears to condition a specific type of human behavior. At the same time, they also reveal a tense environment, a notion reinforced by the disposition of objects lying abandoned in the empty spaces. It is a rarefied atmosphere that evokes a sensation that at any moment something might happen to totally alter the scene.
