This Fall, Ch’i Contemporary Fine Art presents three solo shows by contemporary artists. On October 9th “Times Composed” opens. It is the second installation at the gallery by Korean artist, Sun K. Kwak. Her signature medium of expression, masking tape drawings, are meditative studies of the surrounding environment, a dialogue between the spiritual and natural forces that we struggle to reconcile culture wide. On the surface, the installations are beautiful melodic drawings containing rhythms and momentum resembling improvisational works of art.  Yet, recalling the psychic convolutions of surrealist automatism, each work is a reaction to the environment’s qi (life force).  Tapping into the architecture’s history and former dwellers, Ms. Kwak provides a visual clue into the hidden yet apparent energy within each space.

Irish designer and artist, Joseph Walsh presents his first major solo exhibition of work on October 16th in New York.  The show organized by Ch’i Contemporary Fine Art will be held at the residence of the American Irish Historical Society (991 5th Ave, NYC). Entitled “Realisations,” the exhibition represents the most significant collection of his work created over the last 10 years. “Realisations” will feature work from a number of concepts developed and explored by Joseph Walsh.  These include “Figure and Form” which has resulted in the creation of sculptural flowing forms and “Prism,” which is a geometric structural form.  In this exhibition, each of these concepts is realized through different strands of the work.

“Interior / Exterior Realities” the first solo show by Irish artist, Norman Mooney, at Ch’i Contemporary Fine Art will begin next November 6th, 2008. This exhibition will showcase his series of carbon-on-aluminum paintings. This current body of work is the personal exploration of inner form and how this relates to the outer world. Communicated through a very direct and immediate process of mark making, this engagement enables the fundamental nature of the form to be realized. The marks created are primary, difficult to define; boundaries and definition are blurred between the positive and negative, inner and outer, the intimate and the universal.

Deeply engaged in process, Mooney’s work involves billowing smoke onto large painted aluminum panels. The residue of the smoke settles on the panel and is sealed with a clear fixative. The process is repeated, layer upon layer, until the density and depth of the image is achieved. The ethereal forms created appear to be in a constant state of motion.

Ch’i Contemporary Fine Art, established in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in 1999 and directed by Tracy Causey-Jeffery is committed to exhibiting vibrant contemporary art by living artists: both mid-career and emerging. The gallery exhibits works in two distinct styles: abstract, textural or fragmented figurative. Ch’i hosts 11-15 exhibitions annually with their artists coming from across America, Asia, Europe and South America. In addition to its own exhibitions, Ch’i participates annually in at least 3 international fairs. In 2007, the gallery participated in Fountain NY and the Bridge Art Fairs in Chicago, London, and Miami.
