The contemporary art gallery Lyle O. Reitzel with headquarters in Wynwood Art District and Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) presents the solo show “Makishi Nkishi” African spirit, by the recognized Cuban artist, José Bedia (Havana, Cuba - 1959), at its space in Santo Domingo. The exhibition opened September 18th and is on view through October 30th, 2008.

The curator Omar Pascual Castillo, remarks that: “José Bedia’s latest production has captured closer than before his proximity to the ‘object fetish’ of the primal cultures in which he has habitually interacted, whether in his trips, studies, or through his known collecting activity; to decipher in them the mystery of its healing power, as if Bedia metaphorically intended to extend some kind of collective spiritual healing therapy through his new works of art. In them, he reproduces the essence of the ‘figures of power’ with which he coexists, the force or strength of the masks that hide the cowardice and the fear and generate bravery and honor before the battle, before the hunt, before the dance of the lovers, the dance of the adulthood, the dance of nature.”

Giving continuity to the infinite dialectical dialogue that he has been sustaining since 2003 with his friend, the anthropologist and art historian Manuel Jordán, in MAKISHI + NKISHI (Mask + Object of Power in kikonga language), the exposition now exhibited in Lyle O. Reitzel Gallery in Santo Domingo presents a group of works in which Bedia has returned to the mastery of his visual Neo-Expressionistic resolution. Here he combines the visions of the warrior, the visions of the Tata-Chamán-Kikongo, with the view of the anthropologist; plus the conscience of an artist who knows that his Art is a system of recognition of a subjective truth.
