Runaway Reactions, at Diaspora Vibe Gallery
April 10 - May 21, 2009
VIP Preview Reception on April 9, 2009, 7:00 - 10:00 pm
Diaspora Vibe Gallery announces the “Runaway Reactions” exhibit featuring artworks by Caribbean artists Marlon Griffith and Susan Mains. The exhibition will run from April 10 through May 21 with a preview reception on April 9.
Marlon Griffith’s work builds on and perpetuates the tradition of social criticism in Trinidad’s carnival. The work, which will be displayed on video, is both public and participatory, using elements and material from the carnival out of context and experimenting with light and shadow to project and convey visual ideas. Susan Mains’ work, Many Secrets Lie: Works from Turkey was inspired by a residency spent in the Babayan House of Culture in the Cappadocia region of Turkey in September of 2008. The experience led to an exploration of the quality of light, contrast, and color.
The VIP preview reception on April 9 will run from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm and will be open to the public. The reception, sponsored by Brugal Rum, will give attendees the opportunity to enjoy the exceptional art, hors d’oeuvres and drinks while listening to Caribbean island sounds.
“It is a great pleasure for Diaspora Vibe Gallery to host the works of such talented artists throughout this month-long exhibit. This event is an opportunity for tourists and residents from the South Florida community to enjoy art and an enriching cultural experience,” said Rosie Gordon-Wallace, Executive Director/Curator of Diaspora Vibe Gallery.
