The self and the other, at PanAmerican Art Projects, Miami
October 25th - November 22nd, 2008
In this exhibition PanAmerican Art Projects presents two contemporary Cuban painters, Pedro Pablo Oliva and Rene Francisco, whose work is a direct result of their environment. These two artists are from two different generations, which undoubtedly influences their perception. Their views about social circumstances differ, taking as reference and source of inspiration their personal stories. Pedro Pablo (Pinar del Rio, Cuba, 1949) is offering a more intimate perspective, while Rene Francisco (Holguin, Cuba, 1960) looks towards the concept of multitudes and their impact on society.
This exhibition, previously exhibited at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana, includes a controversial series of paintings by Pedro Pablo Oliva in which the central character is Castro. Loyal to his style, Pedro Pablo’s view on the Cuban political context is given from a very characteristic perspective, private and up close.
Stylistically the paintings of these two artists are extremely different, as if from opposite ends of the spectrum. Pedro Pablo’s imagery is more detailed and often baroque; his paintings are almost completed filled with unique creatures. Rene Francisco favors a more abstract representation. This approach is brought about by his main theme: the masses. Nevertheless both artists are looking at their position in society, at how they see themselves, isolated or as part of a whole group.
