Gallery Walk Special Reception- May 9, 2009

101/Exhibit will feature Charles Pfahl and Curtis Lafollette during April and May in exclusive one-man shows.

Charles Pfahl’s favorite piece Archetype presents a subtle shift of color, which may make unintended references to his works. Having traveled the world, Pfahl’s works of art have become progressively more emotional and symbolic. The religious undertones present in his paintings are part mythic history and part anthropologic fantasy. Busy mannequins and decaying dolls in his more recent pieces reflect a style that has become tighter with more complicated subjects. Described as stunning, intense, and powerful, Pfahl’s masterful use of oil color makes his work with archetypes seem to be part of the collective unconscious. Charles Pfahl is recognized as one of the leading representational artists of his generation. As the recipient of numerous awards including the Isaac N. Maynard award and the Andrew Carnegie Prize, Charles Pfahl paintings are part of the noted collections of Oprah Winfrey, Columbus Museum of Art and Winterman Museum in New York. The Charles Phfal show will open on April 4 and run through May 2. Gallery walk for this show will be on April 11.

Curtis Lafollette pushes beyond the normally considered limits of copper, brass, bronze, silver, gold and stainless steel to create not only functional art, but also intelligent design. In the pursuit of art, his manipulation of form means that a mundane vase is formed anew as a naval mine. Holding a Masters of Fine Art from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Lafollete’s work has been featured in such publications as American Craft and Metalsmith. Lafollette’s imaginative interpretation of flatware and the ubiquitous tea strainer are delights that juxtapose what is sensible for use with what is practical to produce.  In his work, each piece explores the interface of form, content and function, limited only by the internal conflict of the materials at hand. What makes this artist’s work thought provoking is the question of whether or not it is an actual design solution. The Curtis Lafollette show will open on May 9 in conjunction with Gallery walk and will close on June 20.
