Dorsch Gallery is presenting this summer “F(r)acture: divisions in painting.” Curated by Brook Dorsch, this group exhibition features works by Alicia Gibson, David Marsh, Jordan Massangale, Patrick McElnea, Brandon Opalka, Jane Parshall, Carlos Rigau, Karen Seapker and Kevin Van Gorp. The exhibition will be on view through July 18, 2009. The gallery will be closed from July 2 to July 7 in observance of Independence Day.

Carlos Rigau’s video “P.I.U. - A Motivational video for painters” parodies the connotation of the painter and his practice in the art world. Looking at recent painting, styles and approaches seem to oscillate between two poles. Some painters hide their craft, to the extent that their paintings appear to be clumsy, thrown together, easy. Nevertheless, such works, which defy conventional notions of what painting should be, find, in the chaos, an awkward beauty. Other paintings are heavily worked, tight, even obsessive compositions with crude figures and abrasive pastiche. While saturating their canvases with as many loaded references to pop culture and painting as possible, these painters seek the same ungainliness.

Dorsch Gallery has nurtured the development of artists in South Florida since 1993. To provide its artists with new contexts, Dorsch Gallery strives to expand the presence of the artists’ work nationally and internationally. The gallery also invites visiting curators and artists to do work at the gallery. Supplementary writings and events are encouraged. Dorsch Gallery supports and hosts events by Tigertail Productions, Interdisciplinary Sound Arts Workshop, Dixie Dingo Film Festival and other arts organizations. With its program, the gallery seeks to engender aesthetic and conceptual creativity in all audience members and to foster a sustained conversation and debate in the Miami art scene.
