Brandon, Brendan, B.R.E.N.D.A. at Dorsch Gallery
April 11 - May 2, 2009
This is a show about the tension that occurs when curatorial ambition and critical thinking brush up against the enactment of standard exhibition procedures featuring the work of three artists - two real, one fictional - whose work is about the creative friction that occurs when subjectivity brushes up against enactment of procedures of how to be an artist.
Brandon Opalka will show a series of small abstract paintings made with oil and spray paint. These paintings examine the mechanics of gestural abstraction. Based in Miami, this self-taught painter shows regularly at Dorsch Gallery, both in the gallery and on the wall outside.
Brooklyn-based Brendan Harman will show a new group of sculptures. A combination of cheap material and tropes of orthodox twentieth century avant-gardism, Harman’s work questions presuppositions about what art should be. Harman received his MFA from Columbia in 2008.
B.R.E.N.D.A. will show photographs and collages. Her fictional persona treats artistic identity as subject matter.
