ART ASIA presents the first Asian contemporary art fair in Miami this December 4-7, 2008.

With 50 exhibitors from 17 countries, ART ASIA celebrates the expanding presence of Asian art on the global scene. In partnership with the SCOPE art fair, the ART ASIA Fair is located adjacent to SCOPE in the Wynwood Art District. Pulse, Art Miami, Photo Miami, and Design Miami are all steps away from ART ASIA.

ART ASIA features cutting-edge painting, drawing, sculpture, prints, photography, mixed media, installations and video from both established and emerging artists. Many galleries focus on a single artist, presenting their work in depth. Participating exhibitors include galleries from across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, making the fair a celebration of contemporary Asian art as a worldwide phenomenon.

At ART ASIA, a series of lectures and panel discussions, given by prominent curators, scholars, and writers will examine the breadth of Asian contemporary art. Special projects will deepen the understanding of art in Asia today for both experienced collectors and those new to its latest developments.

ART ASIA highlights the striking growth in Asian art, built on the region’s recent economic and cultural boom. The impact of Asian art on the art market in the U.S. and Europe is clear. Over the past decade, artists from China, Japan, India, and South Korea have become some of the most important of our time.

International galleries have brought Asian artists to the West and launched branches in Asia.  New centers of contemporary art have arisen in China, Japan, India, Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam, Singapore and Turkey, all of which will be represented at the fair.

“We’re very excited about Art Asia,”- said Alexis Hubshman, President of Scope Art Fairs - “Our mission is to create a dynamic collaboration with ART ASIA. Working together, we can introduce international collectors to new and provocative Asian artists and Asian galleries to American and European collectors.”

The director of ART ASIA is Ethan Cohen, who since 1987 has been a proponent of Chinese contemporary art through his New York gallery and extensive curatorial projects. Cohen notes, “Asian contemporary art has come of age.  It is very exciting to see an idea that started from a casual conversation amongst gallerists two years ago fully realized.”  The fair is a collaboration with the management team of SCOPE, which sponsors fairs of emerging art worldwide.  While still in its first year, ART ASIA has plans to expand beyond Miami to Basel, Switzerland.
