Edouard Duval Carrié - Mostly Mutants, at Bernice Steinbaum Gallery
April 11 - May 2, 2009
Opening Reception Saturday April 11, 7-10pm
This April Bernice Steinbaum Gallery presents the exhibition “Edouard Duval Carrié - Mostly Mutants.”
Edouard Duval Carrié’s studio is in the “Little Haiti” district of Miami. He was trained in Paris and has lived in Puerto Rico and Canada and traveled to the Republic of Benin in West Africa, the ancestral home of the divinities of Voodoo-a traditional religion of Haiti.
Over 200 years ago, the French colony of Saint Dominique saw the massive deportation of African slaves to its coast. This influx created a society in Haiti that was a Pan African state. The slaves came with a set of beliefs that evolved into a combined religion loosely called Voodoo.
Since Haiti’s proclamation of independence, most of the attention paid to Haiti has been hostile. Haitians have been vilified as savage, forced to pay indemnities to France and invaded three times by the United States Army in the name of restoring law and order to an unruly people.
Haitians today are accused of incubating AIDS (just as their ancestors were accused of incubating syphilis). Haitian refugees are turned back from the shores of Florida while Cubans are allowed entry.
Duval’s new work combines African fables, classical mythology, and Haitian world history with contemporary events. Duval is passionate about Haiti, and his work provokes the viewer to consider why Haiti has been forgotten by the world powers.
